Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991): Blue steel and fire

Arguably one of the best film sequels ever produced, Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) continues to influence the way we talk about artificial intelligence and robotics to this day. It brought back the T-800, who, instead of hunting Sarah Connor to kill her, is there to protect her and her son, John. The family is pursued by a new type of Terminator: the T-1000, an advanced liquid-metal prototype that is more difficult to destroy.

Much had changed between the first and second instalments of the franchise, including technology. Director James Cameron is known for taking filmmaking in new directions, and the visual effects introduced in this film did exactly that.

However, T2 is not just a film about visual effects. It features great characters, thought-provoking themes and striking visuals, beginning with the futuristic war against machines. The film features steel, fire and mechanical environments, favouring night scenes with cool blue lighting in contrast to sunny daytime scenes. It’s all about cold, violent machines and destructive fire.
