Child’s Play 2 (1990): Chucky’s bloody comeback

Set shortly after the events of the first film, Child’s Play 2 sees Andy Barclay, now in foster care, once again targeted by the possessed ‘Good Guy’ doll, which is inhabited by the spirit of a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray. In his new home, he found an ally in Kyle, his foster sister, who helps him fight Chucky.

With a larger scope, this sequel, directed by John Lafia, leaves the small, loving family apartment for institutional spaces: the foster home, the school, and, finally, a factory. Consequently, there are more pursuits and stalkings, and the dynamics and visuals of the slasher genre become more prominent.

Although the film was released in 1990, its aesthetic was clearly 1980s. The lighting, colours, and fashion make this clear. However, it’s the lengthy final confrontation at the factory that makes the film stand out. Featuring conveyor belts, assembly-line machinery, and molten plastic vats, the film cements Chucky’s status as a horror icon of a unique kind.
