Directed by Doug Liman and based on the Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Edge of Tomorrow follows a public relations officer in a futuristic war against an alien species known as “Mimics,” who is forced into combat despite having no combat experience. After a fatal encounter with the enemy, he becomes trapped in a time loop that resets each time he dies, forcing him to repeatedly relive the same battle.
This high-octane sci-fi thriller takes the time-loop subgenre into the realm of the blockbuster and is built around the logic of repetition, failure, and memorisation found in video games. The aim is to repeat until reaching the destination, getting better with each new loop. This presents a significant challenge in film editing, which is addressed here with a dark sense of humour and a keen eye for effective cuts.
With its exhilarating battle sequences, terrifying alien monsters, industrial aesthetic, and sharp sense of black humour, Edge of Tomorrow embraces the fatalistic absurdity of its premise with absolute confidence and becomes endlessly rewatchable.
