Directed by Woo Min-ho and based on a true story, Harbin is set in 1909 during the Japanese occupation of Korea. It tells the story of independence activist Ahn Jung-geun, who leads a group of resistance fighters in a high-risk operation that culminates in the assassination of Japanese statesman Ito Hirobumi in Harbin.

Blending historical drama with espionage and action, the film depicts a group of resistance fighters preparing an assassination following a deadly encounter with the Japanese army. Adopting a controlled and sombre tone, the film emphasises atmosphere and tension-building over constant action. The focus is on the collective effort rather than individual heroism, as the operation depends on coordination, secrecy, and sacrifice.

Harbin follows recent trends in contemporary South Korean historical films by merging national history with genre filmmaking. But rather than becoming an action or war film, it is a large-scale, slow-burning espionage movie, focusing on period reconstruction to ensure the historical significance of the event is an integral part of the narrative.
