Directed by Bong Joon-ho, Memories of Murder is based on South Korea’s first documented serial murder case. Set in a rural province during the 1980s, the story follows two detectives as they attempt to identify and capture a serial killer targeting women. Their investigation is plagued by false leads, unreliable methods, and mounting frustration as the case remains unsolved.
Visually, the film is grounded in naturalistic environments of muddy fields and narrow, dimly lit roads and interrogation rooms, captured with a muted colour palette that emphasises overcast skies and damp landscapes. Rain and other weather conditions become recurring elements that reinforce the instability and obscurity surrounding the case.
The film contrasts two investigative styles. One detective relies on intuition, coercion, and improvised methods, while the other, from Seoul, initially brings a more methodical, evidence-based approach. As the investigation stalls, these conflicting approaches begin to break down, reflecting the limits of institutional competence in the face of uncertainty. This is crystallised in the final shot, where the gaze towards the camera transforms the unresolved case into an open question.
