Oldboy (2003): Stylized revenge with a crazy twist

The second film in Park Chan-wook’s unofficial “Vengeance Trilogy”, following Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and preceding Lady Vengeance, Oldboy is a loose adaptation of the Japanese manga series by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. The film tells the story of a man who is abducted and imprisoned in a private room for fifteen years for no apparent reason. When he is suddenly released, he is given money, clothes, and a phone, along with a challenge from his captor: to discover the reason for his imprisonment within a limited timeframe. As he investigates his past, hidden connections and manipulations gradually reveal the motive behind the ordeal.

The film is particularly renowned for its side-scrolling hallway fight sequence. Violence is presented with a choreographed and often theatrical aesthetic, built around rhythmic editing, strong visual composition, and exaggerated physical endurance. In the hallway scene, the action largely unfolds in a single lateral tracking shot, showing the protagonist battling numerous opponents with a hammer. The framing resembles a two-dimensional video game perspective, emphasising fatigue and persistence rather than heroic elegance.

Despite its memorable fight scenes, the central narrative primarily functions as a mystery. The story is revealed through flashbacks, dreamlike imagery, and fragmented memories, with crucial information withheld until the final act. This gradual revelation allows the story to build towards a dramatic conclusion. Oldboy played a significant part in introducing global audiences to the creative energy of contemporary South Korean cinema, and it remains one of the defining works of Park Chan-wook’s career, as well as being a landmark in modern revenge cinema.
