Yuki Tanada‘s One Million Yen Girl follows a young woman who, after serving a short prison sentence for an incident involving her friends, decides to leave her ordinary life behind. She adopts a simple rule: whenever she saves one million yen, she moves somewhere new and starts again. Travelling from place to place and taking temporary jobs, she repeatedly forms and abandons fragile connections.
Part episodic road film and part character study, the film is about looking for a place to belong. Our protagonist moves from her hometown, where she is no longer welcome, to a sun-drenched seaside resort where she makes shaved ice, an isolated mountain village where she harvests peaches, and a bustling suburban gardening centre near Tokyo. The film offers an exploration of loneliness in changing environments, showing the different faces of Japan where the setting changes but the people stay the same.
Told with deeply grounded bittersweet realism, One Million Yen Girl does not romanticise the modern nomadic life. Instead, it portrays a woman who has chosen to walk away on her own terms, trying to find her place in a world that wants to force her into a mould that does not fit who she wants to be.
