Directed by Brad Bird and produced by Pixar Animation Studios, Ratatouille tells the story of a rat with an unusually refined palate who harbours dreams of becoming a chef in Paris. After forming an unlikely partnership with a young kitchen worker at a prestigious restaurant, he starts to influence the dishes from behind the scenes, all the while attempting to reconcile his artistic ambition with the realities of professional cooking.
Moving away from the superheroes of The Incredibles, Brad Bird developed another richly detailed story about an extraordinary individual seeking recognition from a world that refuses to give it to him. Except this time it’s about an idealistic rat cooking like a great French chef. A classic fairy tale about talent leading to deserved recognition, the film showcases Pixar’s own talent for rendering food, making this cartoony cooking a feast for the eyes, amplified by the clever use of colours that make the flavours seem palpable.
With its highly romanticised version of Paris, filled with nostalgia and dreams of food, Ratatouille has become a love letter to the creative spirit that can come in all shapes and forms.
