Yasuharu Hasebe‘s Delinquent Girl Boss is the first film in Nikkatsu’s Stray Cat Rock series. Set in the streets of Shinjuku, the film follows a girl gang led by Ako who cross paths with Mei, a motorcycle-riding wanderer. The gang becomes involved in a violent power struggle with a yakuza group attempting to rig a local boxing match and clean up the streets through intimidation.
A well-known example of the Pinky Violence subgenre, the film is characterised by its late-1960s pop aesthetics and defiant counterculture spirit. Delivering a psychedelic mix of 1970s fashion, handheld camera shots, and frantic zooms, all set to a garage rock and soul soundtrack, it is as much about style as it is about the story, with long sequences of dancing, motorcycle racing, and wandering the streets capturing the restless energy of Japanese youth.
