The Host (2006): A monster family drama

Directed by Bong Joon-ho, The Host is a monster movie inspired by the dumping of chemicals into the Han River, an incident that occurred in real life. The film revolves around the Park family, who run a small snack stand near the river in Seoul. When a mutated amphibious creature suddenly emerges from the water and begins attacking people on the waterfront, the family’s youngest member is abducted. Convinced that the authorities are incapable of resolving the crisis, the dysfunctional family sets out to rescue her themselves.

Unlike many creature films, which conceal their monsters in darkness, Bong reveals his in broad daylight during the monster’s first major appearance. Despite its large size, the mutant creature avoids the slow, heavy movements typical of giant monsters, instead moving with sudden bursts of speed and awkward leaps. The digital animation emphasises physical weight and biological plausibility, giving the monster a strangely animalistic presence.

Yet the creature itself is not the primary driver of the story. The film remains focused on the family. As the family searches the city’s underground spaces for the monster’s lair, the visual scale gradually contracts as the open riverside environments give way to tighter framing and darker subterranean locations. This progression creates a shift towards claustrophobic tension, all the while maintaining Bong Joon-ho’s characteristic blend of suspense, social commentary, and dark humour.
