Directed by Lee Kyoung-mi and co-written by Park Chan-wook (who later collaborated on No Other Choice), The Truth Beneath is a South Korean thriller set during a high-stakes National Assembly election campaign. The teenage daughter of an ambitious candidate goes missing. While the father remains fixated on his political survival, the mother embarks on a desperate, solitary investigation which reveals a web of school bullying, teacher-student scandals and deep betrayals.

Contrary to what the synopsis might suggest, the film is not a traditional procedural, as its deconstruction of the “grieving mother” archetype sets it apart. Rather than being a passive victim, the mother becomes an unpredictable and increasingly violent force of nature, a transformation reflected through fractured, kinetic editing and a vibrant colour palette mirroring the protagonist’s deteriorating mental state. This is contrasted with an unconventional soundtrack that blends folk music with electronic beats.

Against the backdrop of a polished political campaign, The Truth Beneath exposes the corruption within South Korean social structures and the education system. By blending stylistic excess with a tragic emotional core, the film stands as a unique, genre-defying addition to the already impressive catalogue of modern Korean thrillers.
