Three Days of the Condor (1975): Redford on the run

Produced at the height of 1970s American paranoia cinema, Sydney Pollack’s 1975 film Three Days of the Condor is based on James Grady’s novel “Six Days of the Condor.” The film stars Robert Redford as Joe Turner (code name ‘Condor’), a CIA researcher who reads novels for intelligence patterns. One day, he returns from lunch to find that his entire office has been assassinated. On the run, he tries to expose an internal conspiracy within the agency.
The story unfolds over roughly three days, structured as a sustained pursuit and gradual revelation. Filmed on the streets of New York City under natural lighting, the muted colours and autumnal atmosphere give the film the kind of realism that makes thrillers like this one such a time capsule.
Redford’s casual chic fashion choice, with a hint of suspicion in his eyes, has also become iconic and influential. This impeccably completes the atmosphere that makes the film so engrossing.
