Zootopia 2 (2025): Friends to the end

2025 • Jared Bush & Byron Howard • 2.39:1 • Jump to Gallery

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Zootopia 2 returns to the animal metropolis and follows officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, now established partners in the Zootopia Police Department, as they become involved in a new investigation triggered by the arrival of a mysterious reptile whose presence unsettles the city’s social balance. In order to solve the case, they must go undercover in unfamiliar districts of Zootopia, which takes their partnership into new territory.

While maintaining the buddy-cop and procedural structure of the original film, this sequel avoids repeating the same plot, instead building on the potential of the animal world brilliantly established in the first film. It showcases new and impressively detailed parts of the metropolis and its outskirts, focusing on cold-blooded creatures to further enrich the already impressive environment full of wonderfully designed characters. There is a greater focus on high-octane action, which is counterbalanced by a friendship being put to the test, as is typical of sequels.

Free from the need for heavy exposition to introduce us to its highly colourful and entertaining world, Zootopia 2 moves fast to demonstrate the vast storytelling potential of the franchise and how a good sequel can thrive when creativity is evident throughout, to the point where we forget the cynical, capitalistic motivations behind its production.
