Ghostbusters II (1989): The pink-tinted sequel

1989 • Ivan Reitman • 2.39:1 • Jump to Gallery

Set five years after the original Ghostbusters film, this sequel begins with the team being sued by the city for property damage, resulting in them risking to lose their business. However, when negative emotions in New York City begin to manifest as a subterranean river of psychomagnotheric slime, busting ghosts once again becomes a viable career option.

Back in the director’s chair, Ivan Reitman went bigger, with the whole city becoming angrier this time. The pink slime certainly adds colour to the job of ghost hunting in the New York sewers. In fact, the whole film is less gritty than the original, with more saturated hues.

Recurring visual motifs return (the firehouse, proton packs, Slimer and Ecto-1), but nothing can top the climactic sequence featuring the animated Statue of Liberty walking through New York Harbour and marching through the city’s crowd, who sing along. They ain’t afraid of no ghost!
