Big Trouble in Little China (1986): Jack Burton’s flamboyant adventure

John Carpenter‘s cult classic Big Trouble in Little China (1986) follows truck driver Jack Burton, who becomes involved in a supernatural gang conflict in San Francisco’s Chinatown. In order to help his friend get his fiancée back, he must go up against Lo Pan, an ancient sorcerer who is seeking to break a curse through ritual marriage.

Drawing inspiration from the growing popularity of Hong Kong action cinema in the US, the film blends Hong Kong wuxia fantasy, American action tropes, screwball comedy, and occult mythology. It subverts Western hero expectations by placing a brash American in a situation he barely understands.

Blending Taoist iconography, urban decay, and theatrical excess, the film features action choreography inspired by Hong Kong wire-fu, as well as practical lighting effects such as lightning bolts, glowing eyes, and smoke machines, which create an operatic fantasy atmosphere. The set is designed like a layered vertical labyrinth, creating a unique story with a distinctive look that makes it feel as though you are entering another world without realising it.
