The idea of a married couple who can never tell each other details about their work provides the perfect setting for a spy game. There are investigations and counter-investigations, interrogations and surveillance, and dinner parties where everyone navigates between professional secrets and personal indiscretions. It’s a meeting of the domestic and spy worlds, populated by people with impeccable taste in interior design and cuisine.
As a contemporary example of espionage cinema, Black Bag is an exception. Rather than focusing on gripping action sequences, it centres on slick, old-school information gathering and asset manipulation. It’s an incredibly stylish, intimate character study of how a married couple can deal with the pressure of sharing a professional life.
