Cells at Work! (2024): The mechanics of life, tokusatsu style

Directed by Hideki Takeuchi and adapted from Akane Shimizu’s manga, Cells at Work! follows countless anthropomorphised cells operating inside the human body. The film focuses primarily on a rookie red blood cell and an unrelenting white blood cell as they confront infections, injuries and biological crises. The film connects these microscopic struggles to the daily lives and health conditions of the people they inhabit.

Taking us inside the body of a high school student, and occasionally that of his ageing father, the film turns the internal workings of the human body into a massive urban-industrial system, populated by workers who are constantly responding to emergencies. Embodying the manga-inspired artificiality with a tokusatsu style, it is full of bright colours and avoids biological realism. When the disease becomes overwhelmingly powerful, the film veers into a fantasy world set in a war-like environment where cells are dying on the battlefield of life.

Like the original manga and anime, Cells at Work! presents scientific concepts in a playful and accessible way. The live-action adaptation focuses on spectacle, making use of elaborate sets, choreographed action scenes, comedic performances and heightened emotional stakes. It’s like Power Rangers high on lollipops.
