Cutie Honey (2004): Live-action cartoon

2004 • Hideaki Anno • 1.78:1 • Jump to Gallery ↓
Directed by Hideaki Anno and based on Go Nagai’s manga, Cutie Honey tells the story of a cheerful android girl who can transform into different identities. After her scientist father is murdered, she sets out to fight the criminal organisation Panther Claw and find those responsible.
In pursuit of a live-action anime aesthetic, the film imitates the visual language of manga and animation. Exaggerated poses, freeze-frame gags, and stylised reaction shots mimic the rhythm of comic panels, and action scenes are staged as if animated sequences had been translated directly into live action.
The production design reinforces this playful approach. Sets and costumes are built around highly saturated colours such as hot pinks, yellows, and electric blues, and the visual effects often appear intentionally artificial. Rather than aiming for realism, Anno embraces the plasticity of the source material. The result is a deliberately retro camp spectacle that functions less as a conventional superhero film and more as a live-action cartoon.
