Frankenstein (2025): A wide-angle Gothic beauty

Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 film adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein is not a straightforward horror reimagining, but rather an exploration of the psychological and familial themes of creator and creation.

The film blends gothic horror elements with period detail and emotional drama, contrasting Victorian-era settings with visceral, almost mythical imagery. Using amber tones against steel blues, cinematographer Dan Laustsen and del Toro created emotional depth and thematic resonance in scenes. They often used warm colours to explore memory, intimacy, and human connection, while cooler tones conveyed isolation or existential dread.

Much of what defines this film’s aesthetic is the work of production designer Tamara Deverell, who created elaborate, symbolic sets. The laboratories, which feature mythological motifs such as sculpted Medusa elements and machinery blending Victorian technology with steampunk sensibilities, serve as a visual extension of the characters’ inner lives. This is when classic literature meets modern cinematic craft.
