In Chuck Russell’s 1988 reimagining of The Blob, a small town is thrown into chaos when a gelatinous extraterrestrial organism begins consuming everything in its path. The creature grows larger and more destructive with each victim. While the authorities struggle to understand the threat, a group of survivors attempts to stop the creature before it takes over the entire community.

A remake of the 1958 film, it reworks the original premise through late-1980s horror aesthetics, featuring great practical effects and bodily destruction as a pulsating, fleshy entity of dark magenta and crimson consumes its victims in agonising, gooey detail. Created with complex combinations of gelatin, slime, and animatronics, the alien creature goes through diners, cinemas, sewers, and laboratories, getting bigger and bigger as it absorbs the innocent people of a small, remote town.

While not quite on a par with The Thing, The Blob is still one of the great gems of the 1980s horror genre. It transforms a grotesque goo monster into a terrifying, gory menace in a story with a solid anti-establishment streak.
