2019 • Lee Won-tae • 2.39:1 • Jump to Gallery

A South Korean neo-noir directed by Lee Won-tae, The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil follows a crime boss who survives a brutal attack by a serial killer and forms an uneasy alliance with a determined police detective to track the attacker down. Despite their opposing methods, the two men share a common objective and are willing to set aside their differences to achieve it.

As the title suggests, the film is set in three different universes, each with its own aesthetic. However, as the cop and the gangster team up, the dark underworld of crime starts to consume everything else. It’s a fusion of codes, both narrative and visual, but the action scenes are designed to showcase Ma Dong-seok‘s popular style, making each punch appear more powerful.

In the contemporary South Korean crime thriller genre, The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil is a dark and violent example that is both stylish and unrelenting. It takes brute force and makes it look elegant.
