Michael Mann’s The Last of the Mohicans is an American period epic, adapted from James Fenimore Cooper’s 1826 classic novel of the same name. Set in 1757, the film follows a white man who was raised by a Mohican father and is trying to remain neutral amidst the bloody imperial struggle between Britain and France for control of the continent. His life is turned upside down when he rescues the daughters of a British colonel from a deadly ambush led by a vengeful Huron warrior. As he guides the sisters through the wilderness towards Fort William Henry, a soul-stirring romance develops, setting off a desperate fight for survival.

While staying away from the romanticised tropes of 19th-century literature, Mann kept the romance at the heart of his tale but surrounded it with brutal realism and naturalistic action, capturing the violent collision of empires on the untamed American frontier. Filmed on location for historical authenticity and with Daniel Day-Lewis fully immersing himself in the way of life of his character, the film features breathtaking scenery and action sequences.

The perfect blend of raw violence and unvarnished emotional sincerity is amplified by its haunting main theme. The Last of the Mohicans is a timeless historical drama about love, loyalty, and the tragic disappearance of a culture caught in the gears of an expanding empire.
