This dramatisation of the 1879 Battle of Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War, directed by Cy Endfield, centres on a small British garrison defending a mission station against thousands of Zulu warriors.
One of the most notable large-scale historical battle films, Zulu was shot on location in South Africa using Technicolor. The result is striking, with vivid skies, sun-bleached terrain and sharply contrasting red British uniforms. Its wide CinemaScope compositions emphasise the defensive barricades versus the open plains filled with thousands of Zulu extras.
The landscape dictates the camera movement, alternating between sweeping wide shots of the plains and claustrophobic, low-angle tracking shots of front-line combat. Zulu remains one of the most visually striking war epics ever committed to the screen.
